HCW Wrestling Newsletter 2021 #897 – 4/14 – Fanfest and Hall of Fame

Hello fans and welcome to another installment of the HCW Wrestling Newsletter.  Tonight, we recap both today’s Fanfest and the Hall of Fame ceremony inducting Scooter J, Phat Sol, Davis Hoffmeister and Drew the Canadian Love Machine into HCW illustrious Hall of Fame.

Earlier in the day, the fanfest took place.  Everyone on the roster was in attendance.  A few of the wrestlers like Maxine DeVito, J9, Madman Mason, Dr. Red Fang and Dash Woodbrick all stayed in character and purposefully acted like jerks to the fans.  Most of them ate it up.  The first altercation that transpired happened between World Champion the Wicked Prophet and his PPV opponent Jack Lumber.  Jack was brought out and he went to sit at the autograph table but we hear from behind him “That’s my spot.”  Jack turned to see the World Champion the Wicked Prophet standing behind him.  “I sit at the head of the table; not some schmuck like you”.  Jack then kicked the chair away from the table and then went a little off the deep end (channeling Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne in his confrontation with the Joker):  “You wanna get nuts?  Come on!  Let’s get nuts!”  Prophet doesn’t back down.  Jack eventually sets the chair up and offers it to Prophet who shoulders Jack out of the way and sits down.  Jack then dumped a bunch of peanuts (get it? let’s get NUTS) on the World Champion and the fans in attendance laughed.  Prophet sneered at Jack as Jack went to sit at the other end of the table.

The second altercation came between Madman Mason and the US Champion and King ‘the Ragin Cajun’ Rad Gumbo.  Mason attacked Gumbo during his signing.  Ms. Alexandria was off to the side directing Mason on what to do.  Gumbo suffered a small cut above his eyebrow but it wasn’t anything serious.  He ended having to leave his autograph station early to get looked at.  Fortunately, all the fans who wanted an autograph from him got one.

The Steel Curtain, Texas Wildfire and our four inductees all had huge lines of fans waiting for autographs and selfies.  They stayed and signed for fans for almost an hour after the show technically ended.

This led to our Hall of Fame Ceremony.

GM Max McGillicutty comes out and thanks everyone – fans and roster alike – for attending this great tribute.  The four men being inducted into the Hall of Fame each made their own mark on the business and will go down in HCW history as some of the best wrestlers with some of the best storylines.  Max then introduces Master Bull.  (Editor’s note:  For the sake of time and brevity, the speeches below are the highlights)

Master Bull comes out in a tux and stands at the podium.  “Tonight’s inductee is known to fans worldwide.  (A video montage of Phat Sol’s greatest moments play on the big screen)  He is someone that never backed down from a fight.  After taking a hiatus from the business, he came back and immediately reminded everyone who his is.  Tonight, it is my honor to induct Phat Sol into the Class of 2021 Hall of Fame.”  Fans and wrestlers alike stood and applauded Phat as he came out.  He shakes the hand of Master Bull and Bull steps aside so Phat can have his time in the limelight.

“Thank you one and all.  It is my honor to accept the nomination.  I’ve worked for years in the business before finding a home with HCW.  You, the fans as well as you, the performers, are the best in the business and it’s been my honor to fight alongside or against you.  I’m thankful I was given an opportunity to wrestle.  Before I made the jump to the squared circle, I sat on a phone.  If I was not making calls, I was taking them.  After a while, I realized that I was meant for so much more.  When HCW began offering tryouts, I jumped at the chance.  A special thank you to GM Max McGillicutty as well as the man standing behind me, Master Bull, for that chance to see a dream come true.  Whether you cheered or booed, I hope you enjoyed watching my matches knowing I gave 100% each and every time.  Storylines notwithstanding, I just have to say that I had so much fun doing this and if it weren’t for you, I don’t believe I would have even made it.  So thank you to those here in attendance, to those watching around the world, the Phat Man is officially signing off.”  Phat steps back and the fans stand and cheer him.  He shakes Master Bull’s hand and the two of them head to the back.

GM Max McGillicutty picks up a mic.  “Although it has yet to be announced, Scooter J, our next inductee, has asked for a special, one of a kind, wrestler to induct him tonight.  To introduce our next inductee, ScooterJ, is none other than the Vampire himself, Dr. Red Fang.”

The crowd has a mixed reaction as the Diabolical Doctor walks out on stage. His suit looks quickly put together, and he doesn't look comfortable. The evil Vampire glares at the audience as he stalks to the podium. He hisses and snarls as the spotlight shines on him.  It is quickly turned down.  He sees someone in the front row (he was glaring at Texas Wildfire), and begins to menacingly head in his direction, until the people start laughing.  Upon returning to the podium, Dr. Fang goes through a series of roars, grunts and threating gestures. Each eliciting a laugh. Finally in a fit, the podium itself suffers the wrath of the mad Vampire, as he reduces it to rubble and just walks off.  The announcer then states:  “Ladies and Gentlemen:  Scooter J.”

SJ stands behind the rubble of the podium, trying to look organized.

"I want to thank Dr. Fang for the introduction" he begins. "When first started it was as a working man, I lost count of how many matches I lost and how many back rubs my wife gave me. Eventually, I got help and climbed up the ranks, played a lot of roles and worked for a lot of people." As SJ speaks, he awkwardly reads from his note cards. The ones that would be on the podium. He continues: "After many years, I finally end up in the Hall of Fame with so many others. I may not be in the ring anymore, but I'm not completely out of the sport. Thank you." SJ then reaches down, grabs a piece of the podium and walks off stage.

After Scooter J left the stage, a Hall of Fame member comes out.  It is El Chango – the original partner to the Stache as a member of the original Desperados.  El Chango approaches the podium.  “Ladies and Gentlemen…Last year, I was inducted into this glorious institution alongside my tag team partner Leon Teremoto.  But before Leon, there was the Stache (a giant moustache appears on the screen).

As the Desperados and even into singles action, the Stache made it to the top of the game; not only being a Tag Team Champion but also winning the top title in the business; the World Championship.  An identity change later and Davis ‘the Hoff’ Hoffmeister was born.  As Davis, the also ascended to the top winning multiple championships.  Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my honor to induct into the 2021 Hall of Fame – The Stache aka Davis Hoffmeister.”

The fans pop huge as Davis makes his way out.  He embraces El Chango who steps aside and lets Davis approach the podium.  It takes a moment but eventually the crowd simmers down enough for him to speak.

“Thank You HCW; thank you El Chango and thank YOU, the fans for this honor.  I can’t convey the words to describe the emotion I am feeling; to be part of this is beyond words.  When I first started out as the Stache, as a member of the Desperados, we were a top team trading the belts with the likes of our friends there (he points to the Steel Curtain).  As a singles competitor, I was given a chance to be the top guy in the business and I took that ball and ran with it.  I had some great moments holding the top title but nothing compares, as some of you will see, to being included with such illustrious names in this Hall of Fame.  I am honored and humbled and thank you, each and every one of you for the opportunity to wrestle and entertain you.  It was my honor.”  Davis steps back and dons the Stache mask one last time.  The fans give him a standing ovation and he leaves the stage with El Chango.

GM Max McGillicutty comes out.  “Our final inductee of the night needs no introduction.  Here to induct him is his one-time tag team partner and friend…the Savior.

The Savior makes his way out to nice applause.  (For those who have not been long time readers, the Savior was a teammate as well as opponent to Drew when he wrestled here.  His tenure did not last long as he found a passion elsewhere.)  The Savior speaks.  “Drew has been around for 6 years and has carved his name and legacy into the stone of HCW and he will forever be known as one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step foot in an HCW ring.  He had the adulation of the fans as well as, just recently, the ire.  In the end, Drew is who he is and that is someone the fans appreciate.  It is my honor to introduce the final member of the Class of 2021…Drew the Canadian Love Machine.”

Drew makes his way out and he too gets a standing ovation from the fans.  He gets a little emotional and has to wipe a tear from an eye.  Once the applause died down, he was able to speak.

“Wow.  What a reception.  Thank you everyone.  When I first joined HCW, back then it was called HWF and CSWA, I was an odd man out.  Being from Canada was not looked upon as welcoming as someone from the States but you, the fans, welcomed me with open arms.  That is the reason I was out here day after day giving you 100%:  you deserve it.  You pay your hard earned money for just a couple of hours of entertainment.   You rely on movies and entertainment for your “Calgon, take me away” moment.  I hope that each match I had; every promo I cut; that you felt that I was giving it my all.  I loved being the ‘face’ you loved to cheer.  Hell, oops, I mean Heck, I even got into that brief heelish period.   I want to give a shout out to Jack Lumber.  Jack, thank you for being my opponent.  For taking me from the ‘dark’ and back into the ‘light’.  Over my 6 years in the business, I’ve had some great matches; some great tag team partners with both the Savior and my fellow inductee Davis Hoffmeister.  I loved each and every match from the Five Stars to the absolute stinkers.  You followed me, you backed me and for that, I’ll be forever grateful.  Drew, the Canadian Love Machine loves you all.  Thank you.”  Drew waves to the crowd and then is joined by Davis Hoffmeister, Scooter J and Phat Sol.  The show ends with all 4 men getting a standing ovation from the crowd.

Our Pay-Per-View is next.  Stay Tuned.

HCW Wrestling Newsletter 2021 #896 – Go Home Show

Hello fans and welcome to another installment of the HCW Wrestling Newsletter.  Tonight, we bring you our ‘Go Home’ show – meaning it is the final show before the Critical Mass PPV coming this weekend.  Tonight, the Steel Curtain wrestle in Tag Team action; Derek Deveraux and Apollo Gyze square off; ‘Sassy’ Maxine DeVito takes on Catalina Harper with the winner getting a shot at the Ladies Champion Korbi Kong.  Speaking of the Ladies Champion, she will be on-hand to not only witness this match but to cheer on her bestie Violet Valkyrie who, in tonight’s Main Event, takes on nemesis J9 in a ‘Tables, Ladders & Chairs’ match with the winner getting a future title match.  Lastly, Jack Lumber, Texas Wildfire and the US Champion and King of HCW ‘the Ragin Cajun’ Rad Gumbo take on their PPV opponents in Dr. Red Fang, Madman Mason and World Champion (and FORMER King (haha)) the Wicked Prophet.  We have a PPV to finish our build up to so let’s get this show on the road.

Pyro goes off and we are ready to get the show underway.  We hear familiar music and out comes the Ladies Champion Korbi Kong.First, Catalina Harper comes out to a nice reception from the crowd.  She interacts with the fans and makes her way to the ring.  Once there, her music is abruptly shut off and out comes ‘Sassy’ Maxine DeVito.  Maxine stays on the stage and has a mic in hand.  She insults the fans of Catalina calling them ‘the Litter Box’ as they are full of (BLEEP (the censors caught it in time).  She continues to run Catalina down who just tells Maxine to shut her face and get in the ring.  Maxine drops the mic and rushes the ring.   She slides under the ropes but as Catalina goes after her, she rolls back out.  She points to her head showing she outsmarted the freaky cat lady.  Catalina goes after her and Maxine’s eyes go all wide.  She takes off running around the ring with Catalina in close pursuit.  Maxine suddenly stopped and turned and nailed Catalina, running at full steam, with a clothesline.  She then picks Catalina up and rolls her into the ring.  She removes her jacket and tells the ring attendant to sound the bell so the match can begin.  She immediately makes a cover and Catalina POWERS out of it.   Catalina then dominates Maxine beating her from pillar to post.  At the start of the 8th minute, Maxine drags Catalina outside and the two brawl as the ref starts his count.  Maxine then pulls out a set of handcuffs and attaches one to Catalina’s wrist and the other to the ringside barrier.  Maxine then rolls back in beating the 10 count and he has no choice but to award the match and the title match to Maxine.  Maxine jumps for joy.  Korbi gets up and calls the ref over.  She shows the footage of what Maxine did and the ref said he gets it but it doesn’t change anything.  Korbi then says that if Catalina can defeat Maxine in what is left of the time limit, she should get the chance for that spot.  GM Max McGillicutty comes out and agrees with Korbi.  He says that Catalina has 6 ½ minutes and if she can pin or get Maxine to submit, he will add Catalina to the title match.  Catalina agrees.  Maxine is pissed and gets into Korbi’s face.  Korbi and Maxine trade blows and Maxine tries to whip Korbi into the ringside barrier but Korbi reverses it and Maxine crashes, back first, against the barrier.  Korbi then rolls Maxine into the ring.  The bell rings and Catalina immediately locks in the Catalina Crab.  Maxine taps out almost immediately.  It looks like the Ladies Title match is now a Triple Threat Match.  Korbi leaves followed by Catalina.  Maxine throws a tantrum in the ring before leaving.

Backstage, DD Double D (Dash Woodbrick and Dennis Marshall) attack the Steel Curtain (Starbuck and Buzz Steel) on their way to the ring for their next match.  The attack is short as Dennis and Dash run off right away.  Buzz and Starbuck are pissed but continue on their way to the ring.

Our next match is ready to go.  The Freedom Fighters – Flash and Justice – come out first to booing from the fans.  They make their way into the ring and wait on their opponents.  The music changes and out comes the Steel Curtain.  They have some bumps and bruises but are none the worse for wear.  They shake hands with the fans as they head down to the ring.  The match begins and the two teams go toe to toe.  Surprisingly, the Freedom Fighters held their own but they could not get that illusive 3 count; but neither could the Curtain.  The match ends up going a full 30 minutes and ends in a time limit draw.  The Regulators – Mule and Mammoth – come out and mock the Freedom Fighters for not being able to defeat the Curtain.  Words turn to fisticuffs and the 4 men brawl to the back.  The Curtain watch from the ring shaking their heads in bewilderment.  Just as they are getting ready to leave, they are once again ambushed by DD Double D.  Dash hurls Starbuck into the steel post busting him open while Dennis sets up a table.  Dash and Dennis then pick up Buzz and they double powerbomb him right through the table sending fragments flying in all directions.  Dennis and Dash dust off their hands and then leave while medics come out to check on Buzz and Starbuck.  The Curtain are eventually checked out and leave under their own power.  These two team will be settling this in a few short days.  (30 min draw for the match; 5 for the aftermath)

The TV Champion the Banker is backstage with his manager Ruth Heartless.  Ruth says that Derek had her ejected from ringside at the last show and cheated his way to a win over the Banker.  She says that will never happen again and moving forward, Derek will wish he’d never set foot in HCW.

Our next match is ready to go.  First, Derek Deveraux makes his way out and he gets a nice pop from the fans.  He makes his way to the ring and enters.  He stands back waiting for his opponent.  He doesn’t have to wait long till that annoying phrase “APOLLO GYZE DON’T APOLOGIZE” and out comes Apollo flanked by his new tag team partners Tommy Lightning and ‘the Bounty Hunter’ Jake Montrose.  Apollo gets in a mic and says that his team will reign supreme and will walk out of the PPV as the NEW 6 Man Tag Team champions.  Apollo and his team head to the ring.  The ref warns Tommy and Jake to not interfere or Apollo will be automatically disqualified.  This match was an embarrassment…to Apollo.  Derek DOMINATED him and it really looked sad and pathetic for the man who refuses to ever apologize.  Tommy and Jake managed to make the save for Apollo a few times without being seen by the ref.  At the 28 minute mark, Tommy distracts the ref and Jake hits Derek with a steel chair.  Derek falls to the mat.  Apollo picks him up and nails a Gorilla Press Drop Moonsault.  Apollo makes the cover and gets the 3 count.  Apollo gets the win even after having his ass handed to him.  Just then, the Banker makes his way out and walks over to Apollo handing him an envelope full of cash.  The Banker gets into the ring and stands over Derek.  He picks Derek up and nails a Deposit Diving DDT.  The Banker stands over the prone form of Derek and holds the TV title high as the fans boo.  He then leaves.  The ref and some medics check on Derek and help him to the back.  (28 min for the match; 5 for the aftermath)

Backstage, J9 says that it all comes down to this…a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match against the smug, immature Violet Valkyrie.  J9 says she’s going to smash Violet with a ladder, crown her with a chair and put her through a table.  Once that is all done, she is going to get a title match against Korbi and do the exact same thing to her.  After she walked off, we see someone moving around in the shadows.  Who or what is that?

Our next match, which is almost a main event in itself with all the players involved, is ready to get underway.  First, we hear “VAMPIRE LUNGES FOR EVERYONE” and out comes Dr. Red Fang and his manager the Ambassador. They make their way into the ring.  The music changes and the lights go dim as Madman Mason makes his way out.  He makes his way into the ring and stands reluctantly besides Dr. Red Fang.  Finally, the World Champion the Wicked Prophet makes his way out and the fans boo the loudest of the evening.  He slowly makes his way to the ring keeping everyone waiting.  Mason and Fang look bored.  Next, Jack Lumber’s music hits “TIMMMMBBEERRRR” and out comes the flannel wearing lumberjack.  He quickly introduces his teammates Texas Wildfire and the US Champion and the man who defeated Prophet for the crown ‘the Ragin Cajun’ Rad Gumbo.  The trio shake hands and make their way to the ring.  Each man climbs a separate turnbuckle eliciting louder and louder pops from the fans.  They are all ready for business.  The bell rings and this one is underway.  The faces control the match for the first 10 minutes and the fans love it.

It’s time for our main event. We’ve been waiting for this one all night.  These two finally get their hands on each other and we’ll finally bring this feud to an end.  First, J9 makes her way out to massive boos from the crowd.  She threatens to hit a few of them before ignoring them and making her way to the ring.  She gets in the ring and continues to jaw jack with the fans until the music changes and the stage fills with fog.  Then, like a bullet, out comes Violet Valkyrie on her zip lines and zooms to the ring.  She lowers herself and detaches from her restraints.  She climbs the turnbuckle pumping her fists into the air.  She is ready.  The ref announces the rules being a ‘Tables, Ladders and Chairs’ match.  The winner will get a future title shot at the Ladies Title.  The bell rings and our Main Event is underway.

The cameras stopped rolling and we were actually treated to another small bit.  As Violet was celebrating, Ladies Champion Korbi Kong came out.  Korbi congratulated her and said she looks forward to the two of them squaring off.  Violet says she has Korbi’s back but if that means she can win the title in the meantime, she will.  Violet leaves the ring and heads to the stage.  The two friends have an intense staredown but then hug.  It will be interesting to see it play out.  Stay Tuned.  The Fanfest and Hall of Fame are up next.
